If you are recently engaged, have children, and are now transitioning into planning mode for the big day, don’t worry. That is perfectly normal. However, feel free to take some time to enjoy your new status as a fiancé and not a boyfriend or girlfriend. Enjoy planning for your big day, and be sure to involve your children in the planning process. They will enjoy it too!
Staying calm is one of the best things you can do at this point in the process. The hype of planning a wedding, especially when you already have children, can certainly place a lot of stress and anxiety on you and your significant other. Don’t let it get to you and ruin the joyful period that getting engaged and planning your wedding brings.
One reason to stay calm is that there is not a huge rush in getting everything planned at once. First, talk to your children about what they think about mom getting married. Although your children may not be the main deciding factor on who you should marry, timing is everything. While there are a few aspects that should be taken care of as early as possible, such as booking the wedding and reception venues, a lot of others can be done in the future. Understand your time line for the wedding to get an idea of how much time you have to plan for certain areas, and spend that special time with your children as well.
Once you have your kids’ approval, you can focus more closely on the wedding plans!
Sometimes taking care of the easiest elements of the wedding can make a huge difference. If you know someone or have someone in mind for certain things, such as a photographer or DJ, then you can check those off your to-do list. Likewise, if you know the locations for the wedding/reception, you won’t have to waste time with it looming over your head. Take care of the easier decisions first. This will in turn free up some time for you and your fiancé to focus more on where you want to live, which house is the most affordable, and what area it is in that you both agree to move to.
As you plan your wedding, take it one step at a time and stay organized. Keep confirmation numbers and contacts in one place (and backup that information, if possible) and plan within your budget. Enjoy this time – going from picking out diamond engagement rings to choosing the perfect dress goes all too fast.
