How to Find a Support Group

Support groups are available for almost any issue.  There are support groups available for almost anything, affecting any facet of life.  There are support groups for issues effecting health, such as cancer or addiction issues, such as gambling or alcoholism.  There are support groups for behaviors such as out of control children or adoption issues. The important thing is to find a support that is the right one for you.

There are many places to find support groups such as the yellow pages, the internet, bulletin boards and word of mouth.    Sometimes people get a support group recommendation from a friend or relative who has been a part of the group in the past or currently is involved.   Many organizations such as the American Cancer Society or Gambler’s Anonymous can refer people to appropriate support groups.

Many support groups work different ways.   Some groups may meet once a month, once a week or several times a week.  Pick a support group that works best with your schedule.   Most support groups do not cost money but may have a “hat” they pass for donations to cover costs such as coffee, supplies and rent for meeting space.

Some groups match up new members with more seasoned members of the group for additional support throughout times when the group doesn’t meet.  If you feel you may need this additional support it is best to join a support group with a “sponsor” or “mentor”.

The best way to find a support group that is a good fit for you is to visit the group several times.   Make sure you are comfortable with the way the meetings are handled and the people in the group.   Support groups can be a great asset for anyone going through difficult times.
