There is an important piece of an all too familiar situation. You are in the midst of getting a divorce. You and your spouse have decided that you need to dissolve the marriage. You have no trouble determining who gets which in the settlement. Except the kids aren’t that easy. You both love your children and you are trying desperately to keep them in your life on a full time basis. This is where the divorce can get really messy and where it’s important for you to play your hand right. Making a mistake will hurt your chances of getting full custody.
The apartment is one of those places where it can derail a custody case. It’s not an open and shut thing. The more mistakes you make when choosing a place, the more that evidence will be used to show your unpreparedness and you’ll end up only getting your kids on the weekend. So here is what you should consider about getting an apartment during a custody battle.
Stay Close To Home
This is important, and overlooked, in a custody case. Many of those leaving the home will look for a place closer to their place of employment. The rationale is right, but if there are kids involved the idea is to stay closer to home. You will want to show the courts that you are not going to change the children’s life by your living situation. Keeping them close to their school is something that will be really important and a selling point in the hearing.
Keep The Accommodations Appropriate
Kids need to have their own space and so you need to have an apartment that will allow them to have their own room. Getting a studio for you, your son, and your daughter won’t fly. By the same token, getting a one bedroom for children of different genders won’t work either. You need to provide the right living situation if you want your kids to live there.
